Tomb Raider (2018): Unearthing the Legend, Again

Tomb Raider, directed by Roar Uthaug, brings the iconic video game character Lara Croft to the big screen once again. This action-adventure film serves as a reboot for the franchise, introducing a young and determined Lara Croft, portrayed by Alicia Vikander, as she embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the mysteries surrounding her father's disappearance.

The film kicks off with a slow burn, introducing us to a fiercely independent and resourceful Lara who struggles to accept her inheritance following her father's vanishing. However, when she discovers a hidden message from her father, she sets off to a remote island in search of answers. It is here that the true adventure begins, as Lara finds herself entangled in a treacherous plot involving an ancient tomb and a sinister organization led by Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins).

Alicia Vikander brings a fresh take on the character of Lara Croft, showcasing her physical prowess. She delivers a committed performance and the physically demanding action sequences very well. Those complaining that she does not physically fit the image of Lara are just being ridiculous (If you know the original Lara, you know what I am talking about).

The action sequences in Tomb Raider are the film's strongest aspect. The set pieces are well-executed and cinematography captures the scale and beauty of the locations, showcasing stunning and treacherous landscapes. Where Tomb Raider falls short is in its storytelling and character development. The plot, while providing a solid foundation for the action, lacks originality and fails to offer surprises or unexpected twists. The supporting characters, including Lu Ren (Daniel Wu) and Mathias Vogel, are barely developed, and even the pacing suffers in parts, with certain scenes feeling rushed or lacking proper build-up.

It is one the reboots we always wished was made - which opened it up to higher expectations than usual. It is probably due to that reason that it does not work as well as it should. It is certainly not a bad movie, but rather an entertaining action flick which passes by quickly. Fans of the game and the original series (like myself) would enjoy it, but not something that we would love to watch again.

I rate it 3 out of 5.
