The Hunt (2020): Prey? Predator? Hunter? Hunted? It's A Darkly Comic Rollercoaster

The Hunt is a darkly comic thriller that weaves together satire, action, and social commentary into an edgy experience. Directed by Craig Zobel and written by Nick Cuse and Damon Lindelof, the film takes a daring approach towards action and societal issues.

The story revolves around a group of strangers who wake up in a mysterious and remote location, only to realize they are being hunted for sport by a group of elite liberals. Led by the enigmatic Athena Stone (Hilary Swank), the wealthy elite have selected their "deplorable" targets to take part in a twisted game of survival.

The standout performance in The Hunt comes from Betty Gilpin, who portrays Crystal, one of the hunted individuals. She perfectly fits into the role - as if it was written for her and no one else. The film doesn't shy away from exploring controversial topics - political issues, social issues, societal issues and more. The brutal fight scenes are to the extreme - full of explosions and blood flying everywhere.

Where it lacks a bit is in pacing - there are issues with backstories and intentions which are never fully explained. Also, the satirical approach is very US centric and those not aware would have a definite 'huh?' moment at a few places.

The Hunt does provide you with enough entertainment to keep you engaged. The theme is not for everyone - you would love it or hate it. However, for generating such an emotion, you have to watch it!

I rate it 3.25 out of 5.
