The Core (2003): Diving into the Earth & Ignoring Science

Jon Amiel's The Core takes audiences on a science 'fiction' adventure as a team of experts embarks on a daring mission to save the world. Note the stress on the word fiction.

The plot revolves around a series of catastrophic events caused by the sudden halt of the Earth's rotation. To prevent global disaster, a team led by Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) and Dr. Serge Leveque (Tchéky Karyo) is tasked with drilling to the Earth's core to restart its rotation using a series of nuclear explosions. As they journey deeper into the Earth, the team encounters numerous challenges and unexpected phenomena.

The Core boasts a diverse cast, including Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, and Delroy Lindo. Each actor does well, creating a dynamic team with distinct personalities and expertise. Aaron Eckhart shines as the determined and resourceful Dr. Keyes, while Stanley Tucci adds a touch of humor as the eccentric scientist Dr. Zimsky.

The performances are well done and another one of the film's strengths is its visual effects, which bring to life the awe-inspiring landscapes within the Earth's mantle. Where the issue comes is that The Core takes creative liberties with scientific concepts - and we are talking leaps and bounds!

Overall, the question that comes up - is The Core entertaining? Hell Yes!

Should you concentrate too much on the premise and dialogue? - Hell No! Most of it is wrong.

I would recommend a single watch due to the sheer entertainment value.
