The Canyons (2013): A Cinematic Trainwreck with No Redemption in Sight

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

"The Canyons" is a 2013 erotic thriller film directed by Paul Schrader and written by Bret Easton Ellis. Starring Lindsay Lohan and adult film actor James Deen, the film follows a group of dysfunctional young adults as they navigate the seedy underbelly of Hollywood.

Unfortunately, "The Canyons" falls short in almost every aspect. The script is all over the place and confusing, with characters that are hard to care about or understand. The performances by Lohan and Deen are lackluster, with neither actor demonstrating much range or depth in their portrayals. The pacing is slow, and the film seems to drag on for much longer than its 99-minute runtime.

The cinematography is perhaps the only redeeming quality of the film, with some stunning shots of the Hollywood Hills and the surrounding canyons. However, even these beautiful visuals are not enough to save the movie from its flaws.

Overall, "The Canyons" is a forgettable and disappointing film that fails to deliver on its promises of sex, scandal, and intrigue. It is not worth the time or the effort to watch, unless you want to see Lindsay in her birthday suit. You might want to go to a canyon instead!
