The Art of War (Deals!): A review of War Dogs (2016)

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

War Dogs is a black comedy directed by Todd Phillips and starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. The movie is based on a true story and follows the exploits of two young arms dealers who secure a lucrative contract to supply weapons to the U.S. military in Afghanistan. The film is fast-paced and entertaining, with a strong emphasis on the comedy. Hill and Teller have excellent chemistry as the two leads, and their banter and hijinks are often hilarious. However, beneath the surface-level laughs, the movie also has a lot to say about the corrupt nature of the arms trade and the dangers of greed and ambition.

The story is well-constructed and keeps the audience engaged throughout. The film's direction is slick and polished, with a mix of high-energy action sequences and quieter character moments. The movie also benefits from strong supporting performances, including Bradley Cooper as a shady arms dealer who becomes a mentor to the two leads.

While the film is undeniably entertaining, it also has its flaws. At times, the humor feels a bit forced and the pacing can be uneven. Additionally, the movie's depiction of the war in Afghanistan and the U.S. military's involvement in it is somewhat simplistic and one-sided. Overall, "War Dogs" is a fun and engaging movie with a strong cast and a compelling story. While it may not be the most profound or nuanced film about the arms trade, it certainly entertains.
