Gods of Egypt (2016): Epic Extravaganza? More of a Mythical Mess

Gods of Egypt, directed by Alex Proyas, promised a breathtaking journey into ancient mythology, filled with dazzling visuals and epic battles. However, what unfolds on the screen is a disappointing spectacle that fails to live up to its potential. The trailer promised something which was but a fraction of what I experienced watching this.

The plot goes as such - Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, has taken over the throne of Egypt and plunged the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. A young thief, Bek (Brenton Thwaites), whose love was taken captive by the god, seeks to dethrone and defeat Set with the aid of the powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).

One of the film's selling points was its visual splendor, with larger-than-life gods and stunning mythical landscapes. While there are moments of visual grandeur, the excessive reliance on CGI often feels overwhelming and artificial. It's a missed opportunity to create a truly awe-inspiring cinematic experience. Also, It's disappointing to see such talented individuals trapped in underwritten and one-dimensional characters.

The plot juggles multiple storylines and thus, the movie suffers from erratic pacing. It is not all bad though; there are moments where you appreciate the efforts put into getting the details just right regarding the mythology and certain comedic moments do make you smile.

Ultimately, It fails to leave a lasting impression or capture the grandeur of ancient Egyptian mythology. Gods of Egypt will be remembered as a missed opportunity rather than a memorable cinematic experience. Watch it on TV if you find it scrolling through.
