Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, delivers an unexpected delight that manages to capture the essence of the beloved tabletop game while remaining accessible to newcomers.
The film centers around Edgin Davis (Chris Pine), a former spy-turned-thief/bard, who embarks on a quest to reunite with his daughter and retrieve a powerful artifact that can bring back his late wife. Alongside warrior Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez) and a mismatched group of allies, including Simon (Justice Smith) and Doric (Sophia Lillis), Edgin navigates a perilous journey filled with magic, humor, and unexpected twists.
Chris Pine is charismatic as ever and does his comedic bit with ease. he chemistry between Pine and Michelle Rodriguez is brilliant, Justice Smith brings charm to his role as Simon, while Sophia Lillis provides deadpan humor and a grounded presence as Doric, the shape-shifting druid. And well, Hugh Grant is just so pleasant to watch with his villainous comedic demeanor. The performances aren't groundbreaking but are quite well suited.
The action sequences are visually engaging - seamlessly blended with comedy as well. The comedic dialogues have their ups and downs and the directors' ability to find a harmonious balance between humor, adventure, and the game's core elements is commendable. If there were issues to point out, it would be around explanations related to the characters of the game - more knowledge pertaining to their abilities would have been better.
While not reaching the pinnacle of the action-comedy genre, Honor Among Thieves remains an immensely enjoyable ride. It pays homage to the game's legacy while carving its own path. A good 2 hours to spend for sure!
