Bullet (2014): Aiming for Thrills, Missing The Target

Bullet, directed by Nick Lyon, is an action film that follows the familiar tropes of the genre without offering anything in terms of originality. It only delivers some action sequences, and the lack of depth in its characters and story leaves it feeling like a forgettable entry in the action movie category.

The film follows Frank "Bullet" Marasco (Danny Trejo), a hardened cop hell-bent on seeking justice for his kidnapped grandson. Teamed up with Detective Alicia Vargas (Torrance Coombs), they embark on a relentless quest to bring down a dangerous drug lord and his gang.

Danny Trejo's rugged charisma adds some flair to his role, but the film does little to explore his character beyond the tough cop stereotype. Torrance Coombs offers a okay-ish performance, and the chemistry between the two leads lacks the necessary spark to elevate their partnership. Bullet struggles to maintain coherence in its narrative. The plot is formulaic, and the twists and turns are predictable, robbing the film of any genuine surprises. The cinematography is just about competent while everything else is just lackluster.

If you're a fan of Danny Trejo's tough-guy persona and enjoy mindless action, Bullet may provide a brief thrill. Trejo's movies are usually somewhat outlandish, heavy on the "grindhouse" style, and inventive. This film has none of that.
