Breaking the Girls (2012): A Promising Premise Lost in a Maze of Mediocrity

Breaking the Girls, directed by Jamie Babbit, falls short of its potential as a gripping psychological thriller. Despite its promising premise and a talented cast, the film struggles to find its footing and deliver a satisfying and cohesive narrative.

The story revolves around Sara (Agnes Bruckner), a law student burdened by personal struggles, who forms an alliance with Alex (Madeline Zima), an enigmatic and seductive woman. Together, they embark on a path of vengeance and manipulation. The performances are decent, with Agnes Bruckner doing her best to portray Sara's internal turmoil. Madeline Zima brings a sense of allure and unpredictability to the character of Alex. However, the script fails to provide them with enough depth and development, leaving the characters feeling one-dimensional and lacking the necessary complexity.

The twists and turns intended to keep you engaged often feel forced and contrived, sacrificing coherence for the sake of surprise. As a result, the story loses its focus, leaving behind a trail of unresolved subplots and loose ends. The film struggles to maintain a consistent tone, wavering between suspense and melodrama without finding a proper balance. You would find a suspenseful moment followed by something completely unrelated and then boom! - sexual acts.

Breaking the Girls is a thriller that falls short of its potential. Despite a promising premise and a decent cast, the film suffers from a disjointed plot, underdeveloped characters, and a lack of coherence. While it may offer a few moments of intrigue, it ultimately fails to deliver a satisfying and memorable viewing experience. Still, there are worse things to watch than this - probably if nothing else is on you can give this is a go.
