Angel Has Fallen (2019): An Action Flick with Familiar Tropes

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

Banning is back!

Angel Has Fallen, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, is the third installment in the Fallen film series, featuring Gerard Butler as Secret Service agent Mike Banning. While the film delivers on its promises of action and suspense, it falls victim to formulaic storytelling.

This time, Mike Banning becomes the target of a sinister plot when he is framed for an assassination attempt on the President (Morgan Freeman). On the run and trying to clear his name, Banning must uncover the truth behind the conspiracy while evading capture by both law enforcement and the real culprits.

Gerard Butler displays the same rugged charm and physicality that he has become known for in the series. Butler's performance anchors the film, and his chemistry with Morgan Freeman is decent, having been built up in 3 movies now.

The action sequences in Angel Has Fallen are well-executed, featuring intense shootouts, explosive set pieces, and hand-to-hand combat. The practical effects and stunt work contribute to the authenticity of the action - much better than the second installment. The plot unfolds predictably, following a well-worn path of conspiracy and betrayal. You would be watching any scene and say 'I bet this is what happens next' and it would. However, Ric Roman Waugh's direction maintains a competent level of craftsmanship, effectively capturing the action sequences and maintaining a sense of tension. It still offers an entertaining popcorn flick - give it a go and you won't be disappointed.
