American Made (2017): Cocaine Cowboys and Maverick Pilots

American Made, directed by Doug Liman, is a ride through the true story of Barry Seal, a TWA pilot turned drug smuggler turned informant for the CIA. The story showcases the high-stakes world of drug trafficking and covert operations during the 1980s. Liman's direction keeps the energy levels consistently high, blending intense action sequences with dark humor and a pulsating soundtrack that perfectly captures the era's essence.

Tom Cruise as seal is just mesmerizing - he is at his natural best and it looks effortless for him. Cruise's chemistry with the supporting cast, including Sarah Wright as Seal's wife Lucy and Domhnall Gleeson as the enigmatic CIA handler Monty Schafer is another spectacle. Visually, American Made delivers stunning cinematography, showcasing breathtaking aerial shots that capture the vastness of the landscapes and the thrill of Seal's escapades. The production design effectively recreates the '80s atmosphere, from the fashion to the technology.

While the film's pacing remains tight for the most part, there are a few instances where the narrative loses some momentum. It's a testament to the talents of Tom Cruise, Doug Liman, and the rest of the cast and crew who have crafted an entertaining yet insightful cinematic experience. Strap yourself in for a wild ride full of loyalty, betrayal, power and corruption.
