Alita: Battle Angel (2019): Cyberpunk Extravaganza With A Kick-Ass Heroine

Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, is a visually stunning sci-fi film that brings the beloved manga series "Gunnm" to life. Set in the dystopian future of Iron City, the story revolves around Alita (Rosa Salazar), a cyborg with no memory of her past, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and resilience.

The film's greatest triumph lies in its state-of-the-art visual effects, seamlessly blending CGI and motion-capture technology to create an intricately detailed and breathtaking world. From the towering skyscrapers to the Motorball arena, every frame is a testament to the filmmakers' dedication to capturing the essence of the source material.

Rosa Salazar's portrayal of Alita is grand - how she evolves from a curious and naïve entity to a formidable warrior driven by a strong sense of justice. Supporting performances from Christoph Waltz as Dr. Dyson Ido and Mahershala Ali as the menacing Vector add good depth to the narrative. The visuals and the action sequences are a true highlight and entertaining all the way.

With greatness comes the burden as well - the film's ambitious world-building sometimes detracts from the pacing, and certain plot points feel rushed or underdeveloped. Additionally, the romantic subplot between Alita and Hugo (Keean Johnson) lacks chemistry completely.

Alita: Battle Angel is a must-see for fans of science fiction and manga. For those who are not fans, it is a definite decent watch which will keep you entertained for 120 mins with great visuals and themes of identity, humanity, and the consequences of unchecked power.
