A Most Violent Year (2014): Crime & Morality, all for the American Dream
J.C. Chandor's A Most Violent Year is a wonderfully crafted crime drama that takes you on a journey through the morally complex and dangerous world of New York City in 1981. In this film, the pursuit of the American Dream unfolds against a backdrop of crime, corruption, and betrayal.
Set during what is famously known as one of the most crime-ridden years in New York's history, the film follows Abel Morales, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, a determined immigrant who seeks to expand his heating oil business while staying true to his principles. Jessica Chastain delivers a powerhouse performance as Anna Morales, Abel's resourceful and complex wife, who stands by him as they face mounting threats.
Oscar Isaac's portrayal of Abel is nothing short of exceptional. He captures the character's struggle to maintain integrity in a world full of violence and temptation. Abel's commitment to ethical business practices in the face of escalating danger is compelling. Chandor's direction is superb, creating a sense of tension and unease that shows in every frame. The film's cinematography, characterized by muted colors and a bleak, wintry atmosphere, adds to the overall sense. The pacing is deliberately slow, allowing the suspense to build gradually as the stakes rise. This can create a problem for some viewers as their patience will be tested.
Violence is a constant presence in the film, but it is the restraint exercised in its depiction that makes it all the more impactful. This film is not everyone's cup of tea, with people not knowing about the history of New York during that period, the statement comes up of the film not being entertaining or gripping enough. Yet, this film is a cinematic triumph, blending elements of crime, drama, and moral exploration into an excellent narrative.
